As a coach, this is the first question I get asked. The second question is usually ‘what is coaching going to do for me’, a more complex one to address… So, I’ll try to address both together.
Coaching for me is about getting clear on what you want, identifying what’s in the way, and with the support of a qualified experienced coach, shifting your perspective to what’s important. It’s a collaborative, trusting space that, if you allow it, has the power to transform your life.
So, before you sign up to yet another leadership development course or engage a business coach, take a pause, and some time out to ask what actually is the job you are trying to do and are you doing it; is it in line with the business goals; in line with your own development goals; are you adding distinct, clear, quantifiable value in your role; are you enjoying it, enjoying the company and the thriving within the culture of your organisation.
Many individuals just do not have the time or bandwidth to unlearn behaviours that are no longer effective for them or re-evaluate what strengths they may be overplaying. Even less focus is placed on strategically assessing and growing individual leadership capabilities in the day-to-day grind of managing, delivering and getting the job done.
Once you are clear on what you want, there are varied resources like one-to-one executive coaching, bespoke team coaching programmes or participating in executive peer group coaching sessions that can support you to have coaching conversations that create trust and connection to get to the core of what is your next step. Then is it a case of making time for coaching – and allowing it to transform.
